Tuberculosis kills over 56,000 annually in Ethiopia

(APA-) Over 56,000 people died annually in Ethiopia due to tuberculosis while another 260,000 are affected annually, according to a report released on Wednesday.

The report said Ethiopia is among the 22 highly affected countries in the world and ranks second in Africa in its tuberculosis infection rate.

Ethiopian Ministry of Health called on all health sector stakeholders to make contributions to the prevention and control of tuberculosis which is becoming a health threat especially in the rural areas of the country.

Health Minister Kebede Worku said that most tuberculosis patients in Ethiopia die in their prime.

“This fact shows the magnitude of psychosocial and economic impacts the disease has,” he said.
